Grade Calculator
Calculate your percentage, letter grade, weighted course grade, or the score needed to reach a target grade.
Add one or more assignments, quizzes, tests, or subjects.
Use this when assignments or categories have different percentage weights.
Find the score needed on a final exam or remaining assessment.
How Does This Grade Calculator Work?
Choose Simple Grade to combine points from one or more assignments, Weighted Grade to combine categories with different weights, or Target Grade to find the score needed on a final exam or remaining assessment.
How to Calculate a Grade
Divide the points you earned by the total possible points, then multiply by 100. The result is your percentage grade.
Grade Calculation Example
If you earn 87 points out of 100 possible points, your percentage grade is 87%. Using the default scale on this calculator, 87% is a B+.
Letter Grade Scale
This calculator uses the default grading scale shown below. Schools and colleges may use different cutoffs, so check your institution's official grading policy when an exact letter grade is required.
| Percentage | Letter Grade |
|---|---|
| 97–100% | A+ |
| 93–96.99% | A |
| 90–92.99% | A− |
| 87–89.99% | B+ |
| 83–86.99% | B |
| 80–82.99% | B− |
| 77–79.99% | C+ |
| 73–76.99% | C |
| 70–72.99% | C− |
| 67–69.99% | D+ |
| 63–66.99% | D |
| 60–62.99% | D− |
| Below 60% | F |
How to Calculate a Weighted Grade
For each item or category, first calculate its score percentage. Multiply that percentage by its weight, then add the weighted contributions. If the entered weights total less than 100%, this calculator normalizes the result across the weights entered.
Weighted Grade Example
If scores are 90% at 30% weight, 80% at 20% weight, and 95% at 50% weight, the weighted grade is 90.50%.
How to Calculate a Target Grade
Enter your current grade, the weight of the final exam or remaining assessment, and your desired overall course grade. The calculator estimates the score you need on that remaining assessment.
Target Grade Example
If your current grade is 85%, the final exam is worth 20%, and you want an 87% course grade, you need 95% on the final exam.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a grade percentage?
A grade percentage shows how many points you earned compared with the total points available, expressed as a percentage.
What is a weighted grade?
A weighted grade gives different assignments or categories different importance. For example, exams may count more toward a final grade than homework.
Do the weights need to add up to 100%?
For a complete course-grade calculation, weights normally total 100%. If the weights you enter total less than 100%, this calculator shows the normalized grade across the items entered.
What does Target Grade calculate?
Target Grade estimates the score needed on a final exam or remaining assessment to reach your desired overall course grade.
Can I enter decimal scores?
Yes. You can enter decimal values for earned points, possible points, and weights.
Can my score be higher than 100%?
Yes. Some classes award extra credit, so the calculator allows earned points to exceed possible points. Your institution may handle extra credit differently.
Why might my school's letter grade be different?
Grading scales vary by school, college, course, and instructor. Use your institution's official cutoffs if they differ from the default scale shown here.
