How Does This GPA Calculator Work?

Choose Semester GPA to calculate your current term, or Cumulative GPA to combine your previous academic record with your current courses. Enter each letter grade and its credit hours, then select Calculate GPA.

How to Calculate GPA

Convert each letter grade to its grade-point value. Multiply that value by the course credit hours, add the grade points for all courses, and divide by the total number of credits.

GPA Formula
GPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

4.0 GPA Scale

This calculator uses a common unweighted 4.0 scale. On this scale, both A+ and A are worth 4.0 grade points. Some schools use different values, including 4.33 for A+, so check your institution's official grading policy when needed.

Letter GradeGrade Points
A+4.0
A4.0
A−3.7
B+3.3
B3.0
B−2.7
C+2.3
C2.0
C−1.7
D+1.3
D1.0
F0.0

GPA Calculation Example

If you earn an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course, you receive 4.0 × 3 = 12 grade points. A B (3.0) in another 3-credit course gives 3.0 × 3 = 9 grade points. The total is 21 grade points across 6 credits, so 21 ÷ 6 = a 3.50 GPA.

Semester GPA and Cumulative GPA

A semester GPA measures the courses in one term. A cumulative GPA combines your previous academic record with the courses in your current semester. This makes the calculator useful as a college GPA calculator, semester GPA calculator, and cumulative GPA calculator when your institution uses the displayed 4.0 scale.

Cumulative GPA Formula
Cumulative GPA =
Previous Total Points + Current Grade Points Previous Credits + Current Credits

Frequently Asked Questions

What is GPA?

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It summarizes academic performance by converting course grades into numerical grade points.

Why are A+ and A both 4.0?

On the common unweighted 4.0 scale used by this calculator, A+ and A both receive 4.0 points. Some institutions use a different scale, such as 4.33 for A+.

How do I calculate cumulative GPA?

Multiply your previous GPA by your previous credits to get previous total points. Add your current semester grade points, then divide by your previous credits plus your current semester credits.

What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?

Semester GPA uses only the courses from one term. Cumulative GPA combines your previous GPA and credits with your current semester results.

Can I use this as a high school GPA calculator?

Yes, if your high school uses the displayed unweighted 4.0 scale. Weighted AP, IB, or honors grading can use different point values.

Do credit hours affect GPA?

Yes. A course with more credit hours has a greater effect on your GPA because its grade contributes more total grade points.

Can I add more courses?

Yes. Select the Add Course button to include additional courses before calculating your GPA.

Can I use this calculator if my school uses a different GPA scale?

This calculator is designed for the displayed 4.0 scale. If your school uses different grade-point values, use your institution's official grading rules for an exact result.
