How Does This CGPA Calculator Work?
This cumulative GPA calculator combines semester GPAs according to their credit hours. A semester with more credit hours has a larger effect on the final CGPA than a semester with fewer credit hours.
How to Calculate CGPA
Multiply each semester GPA by that semester's credit hours to get its quality points. Add all quality points and divide the total by the total credit hours.
CGPA Calculation Example
Suppose Semester 1 has a GPA of 3.50 with 15 credit hours and Semester 2 has a GPA of 3.80 with 18 credit hours. The weighted CGPA is (3.50 × 15 + 3.80 × 18) ÷ 33 = 3.66.
GPA vs CGPA: What Is the Difference?
GPA commonly describes academic performance for a particular semester or period, while CGPA describes cumulative performance across multiple semesters. Exact terminology and calculation policies can vary by institution.
Why Do Credit Hours Affect CGPA?
Credit hours represent the weight of academic work included in the calculation. Because CGPA is weighted, semesters with more credit hours contribute more to the cumulative result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I calculate CGPA from semester GPA?
Yes. Enter each semester GPA together with its credit hours. The calculator weights every semester by its credit hours before calculating the cumulative GPA.
Can I simply average my semester GPAs?
Only when every semester has the same credit-hour weight would a simple average give the same result. When credit hours differ, a weighted calculation is needed.
What are quality points?
In this calculator, semester quality points are the semester GPA multiplied by its credit hours. The total quality points are used with total credit hours to calculate CGPA.
Does this calculator support a 5.0 GPA scale?
Yes. Select the 5.0 scale before entering your semester GPAs. Always use the scale and academic rules specified by your institution.
Can I convert CGPA to percentage?
This calculator does not apply a fixed CGPA-to-percentage conversion because conversion rules can differ by institution and grading system. Use your institution's official conversion method when one is required.
How do I calculate CGPA for 8 semesters?
Click “+ Add Semester” until you have 8 rows, enter the GPA and credit hours for each semester, and select “Calculate CGPA” to get the weighted cumulative result.
Are repeated or transferred courses handled automatically?
No. Universities may have different rules for repeated, transferred, excluded, or pass/fail courses. Enter semester GPA and credit-hour figures that follow your institution's official academic policy.
